I want a mid-length Butterfly Cut: shorter feathered face-framing layers that sweep outward like soft wings, longer layers underneath through the sides and back, a connected mid-length perimeter, and a clean neckline. Not a short textured crop, not curtain bangs with tapered short sides, and not a mullet rear panel.
A men's Butterfly Cut is a mid-length layered haircut built around shorter face-framing pieces that sweep outward like soft wings, with longer layers underneath that keep length through the sides and back—usually landing somewhere between the jaw and the shoulders. From the front it can look airy and fuller around the cheeks; from behind you still see a connected mid-length perimeter, not a short taper crop.
The after look should feel salon-finished and wearable: lifted at the crown, feathered face frame, soft matte-to-natural texture, and a tidy neckline. It is not a short textured crop, not a curtain fringe with clipped short sides, and not a mullet with a long rear panel.
A men's Curtain Bangs cut usually keeps a clear middle-parted fringe and shorter tapered sides. A men's Butterfly Cut keeps more mid-length hair through the perimeter so the face-frame wings can blend into longer side and back layers instead of dropping into a short taper.
A shag or wolf-leaning men's cut often pushes choppier crown texture and stronger disconnection. Butterfly layering aims for softer, winged face framing with a fuller mid-length outline. A classic medium-length layered cut can look similar if the face frame is mild; a true Butterfly Cut asks for clearer contrast between the shorter wings and the longer base.
Choose it if you want mid-length movement and face framing without committing to very long hair, and you can spend a few minutes blow-drying or finger-styling the front most days. It suits casual, creative, and smart-casual settings when the perimeter length is kept intentional.
Pause if you need a low-maintenance short office crop—this cut grows into soft length and needs shaping. Very fine, flat hair may need lighter contrast and root lift so the crown does not look sparse. If you prefer a hard middle-part curtain with short sides, ask for Curtain Bangs instead of a full mid-length Butterfly Cut.
Oval faces usually wear cheek-to-jaw wings cleanly with room to adjust crown height. Oblong faces often look better with wider face framing and moderate crown lift so the cut does not stretch the face further.
Heart shapes can use softer wings that add width near the jaw. Round faces often benefit from slightly higher crown lift and wings that start near the cheekbones to open the face. Square faces usually prefer feathered, curved wings rather than a hard shelf sitting on the jawline.
Wavy and medium-thick hair holds the winged bounce with less product. Straight hair works when you blow-dry the front pieces away from the face; fine straight hair needs lighter layering so the crown stays full.
Curly hair can wear a Butterfly Cut if the barber plans for shrinkage and you style with cream or a diffuser. Dense coarse hair may need internal thinning in the face frame so the wings do not sit heavy. Very sparse crowns should keep contrast softer and preview first.
On damp hair, rough-dry the crown for lift, then use a round brush or fingers to sweep the face-framing pieces away from the cheeks. A light matte cream or sea-salt spray helps separation without a wet gel helmet.
For a softer day, air-dry most of the way and twist the front pieces outward while they finish. Keep heavy oil off the shortest layers. Pair the mid-length perimeter with a clean neckline so the cut still looks intentional as it grows.
Plan a shape refresh about every 6–8 weeks. The face-framing wings lose their outward lift first; when they hang heavy on the cheeks, book a tidy even if the back still feels long enough.
Bring front and side photos. Tell the barber: mid-length Butterfly Cut—shorter feathered face-framing layers that flick outward, longer layers underneath through the sides and back, connected mid-length perimeter, clean neckline—not a short crop, not a curtain with tapered short sides, not a mullet panel.
| Style | How it differs from a men's Butterfly Cut |
|---|---|
| Curtain Bangs (men) | Clearer short fringe + shorter tapered sides |
| Textured crop | Short top and short sides; little mid-length wing |
| Shag / wolf lean | Choppier all-over texture and stronger disconnection |
| Medium layered cut | Softer face frame; less short-to-long wing contrast |
| Mullet | Distinctly longer rear panel; Butterfly keeps a fuller connected mid-length back |
Stay with a Butterfly Cut when you want winged face framing on mid-length hair. Choose Curtain Bangs if you want a parted fringe with short sides, or a textured crop if you want short wash-and-go length.
Wing length, perimeter length, and how much contrast you keep all change whether the cut reads soft, shaggy, or almost long. A SeeMyCut preview lets you compare jaw-length versus shoulder-skimming versions on your own photo and decide crown lift before you cut. Trying the after look first makes it easier to tell your barber how winged and how long you want the finished men's Butterfly Cut.
